Babar is a cute book series, indeed, but I don't think it sends a good message overall.  Cornelius wanted Babar to be the new king of the elephants because Babar had learned so much while living among humans, and when he and Celeste got married, all of the other animals were happy to celebrate with them, including the rhinos.  Alas, after the wedding ceremonies were over, Babar expressed his desire to build the city of Celesteville.  Led by Rataxus, the rhinos destroyed it while it was in the process of being built.  Fortunately, Babar comes up with a plan: he paints scary faces on the elephants' rear ends, and this proves sufficient to frighten away the rhinos.  The elephants then complete the construction of their city.  The reason I don't like the message this book sends is because it seems like Babar too quickly got over the fact that his mother was killed by a sport hunter, and then he started developing the countryside at the rhinos' expense.  Of course they fought back.  It would have been nicer if, instead of a city, the elephants had built an armed command center accessible only to them, for fighting back against hunters and developers.  If they had done this, the rhinos never would have declared war on them.  These books appear to stress the importance of staying strong through times of strife, but not of wildlife conservation, habitat preservation, or electing leaders based on reliable credentials.  The presence of one positive message shouldn't be worth the absence of three.
